Abstract about results of PICASSO Phase I and outlook on Phase II has been accepted for AGU fall meeting 2009 - 21 October 2009

We are pleased to announce that the abstract The PICASSO project: MT Investigation in Southern Spain and Morocco - Results of phase I and outlook on phase II was accepted for a poster presentation at the 2009 AGU Fall Meeting, 14-18 December, in San Francisco. The poster will be presented in the Poster Hall, Moscone South at 747 Howard Street on December 17, 2009.

Start of PICASSO phase II fieldwork campaign in Morocco - 01 October 2009

The fieldwork campaign for PICASSO Phase II in Morocco has started with the Italian delegation from University of Bari working in the area of Midelt in the east of the country. They will be reinforced by the members of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and the University of Barcelona together with students from the University of Meknes on the 5th of October building a multi-national team taking on the challenge to investigate crustal and mantle structures beneath the Atlas-Mountain ranges together. The campaign is planned to finish by the end of 2009 with first results to be presented at the AGU fall meeting.

Scouting for PICASSO phase II in Morocco - 26 September 2009

Duygu Kiyan, Colin Hogg, Pierpaolo Moretti, and Yussuf Seddas are travelling through Morocco in order to prepare this year's fieldwork by seeking suitable locations and permission for magnetotelluric recordings in the area under investigation.

The new Topo-Med PhD student at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) Duygu Kiyan joined the PICASSO project focussing her work on the investigation of the mantle structures beneath the Atlas-Mountain ranges.

Model of the PICASSO project were presented on the EGU meeting 2009 - 27 April 2009

Jan-Philipp Schmoldt presented a preliminary model of the subsurface geological structure along a profile from Madrid to the Mediterranean Sea on the European Geophysical Union (EGU) meeting 2009 in Vienna. The model uses the orientation of the Betic mountain chain and the Trans-Alboran Suture zone in order to put constraints on the geoelectric strike direction, which appears to be fairly variable along the profile and with depth.

Presentation of PICASSO results given at 52nd IGRM - 22 February 2009

The purpose of magnetotelluric measurements, its application together with processing of the collected data and first results of the PICASSO project were presented at the 52nd Irish Geological Research Meeting (IGRM) by Jan-Philipp Schmoldt.

New PICASSO PhD student has arrived in DIAS - 28 January 2009

We are glad to announce, that Said Gaci has started his PhD studentship in DIAS today. He will be part of the PICASSO project team and we are all looking forward to fruitful cooperation and further enhancement of productivity.

First results of PICASSO have been presented on 19th EMIW in Beijing - 29 October 2008

During the 19th ElectroMagnetic Induction Workshop (EMIW) in Beijing, China, the first results of the PICASSO project were presented by Jan-Philipp Schmoldt. The organising committee aggreed for an oral and a poster presentation titled "PICASSO - Phase I: MT Investigation of the Betic-Rif mountain. Comparison of actual robust processing algorithms and enhancement of time series data through separate E-line channel interpretation".

Second meeting about the PICASSO - Phase II held in Barcelona - 01 October 2008

Proposed profiles PICASSO phase II

Following the meeting on the 4th of September, a second meeting was held in Barcelona to liase with collaborators for the PICASSO MT fieldwork in Morocco (Spring 2009). Members of the University Bari (Italy), Barcelona (Spain), and the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (Ireland) came together along with members of the Institute Jaume Almera (Spain) to agree on the location and schedule for the fieldwork in 2009. Furthermore, plans have been made on how to optimise the MT instruments and personnel of the participating institutions.

First meeting about the PICASSO - Phase II - 04 September 2008

The first multinational / multi-institutional meeting with members of the University Barcelona (Spain), the Institute Jaume Almera (Spain), Rice University (USA), and the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (Ireland) was held in Barcelona. Delegates of the projects: US-PICASSO, Ireland PICASSO-MT, TOPOMED, TOPOIBERIA-SIBERIA, and SIMA came together to coordinate their activities in the area of Western Europe, the Mediterranean Sea and Morocco to optimise their scientific campaigns.

Abstract has been accepted for 19th EMIW meeting - 08 July 2008

The abstract "PICASSO- Phase I: MT Investigation of the Betic-Rif mountain. Comparison of actual robust processing algorithms" has been accepted. Thus, first results of the PICASSO MT fieldwork will be presented on the 19th ElectroMagnetic Induction Workshop (EMIW) in Beijing, China at the end of October.
